Photographing Mother By Sundaram
Mother, the living precious gift of nature symbolizes sacrifice and selfless service. But in the modern era ungrateful children, ill-tempered relatives and self-centred husband play key role to make her life miserable.
The presented poetry "Photographing Mother" has been composed by Sundaram. The poet has tried to draw the authentic picture of a typical mother, who was being taken to a studio for final photograph by her sons. The pathetic condition of the lady can be represented in following ways : - Final photograph - In the poem, the narrator and his brother took their mother to the local studio for her final photograph. The studio was nicely decorated where the mother took her seat on the chair. The soft spoken photographer instructed her to stretch her legs and hold her head up. Some flowers and books were also arranged near head. Finally the photographer let the light and shadow remain on her face.
Suggestion of photographer - The narrator says that the photographer suggested his mother to forget her grief and feel at home after going behind the camera. He adjusted the focus and fixed the plate, covering his face with a black cloth. He too, instructed her to remember pleasant moments of life.Negletion inspite of hard-work - The poet wanted to know the fact if her mother would forget the present and remember the happy moment of her past. She was taken to doctors, parks, theaters etc. They too, wanted to remind her forever, so the mother was taken to studio to take her final photograph. It was only an evidence of their love to her.
Spoiled photo represents ruined life - Finally the poet wanted to see the smile of her mother in the snap. But he became sad to see her eyes like two big frozen tears. He saw pair and sorrow in them. But the photographer lost his temper because his photo plate was spoiled. He was shouting in anger without knowing the fact that the woman's life was also ruined.
