Amalkanti - By Nirendranath Chakarborty
Introduction -
The presented poetry “Amalkanti” has been composed by Nirendranath Chakraborty. Originally the poem was written in Bengali but is now available to all non-Bengali languages. Amalkanti means "pure radiance" in Hindi as well as in Bangla. The meaning affects the understanding of the poem. The poet has used irony to express the facts of success and achievement.
The irony is a literary device through which the writer or speaker expresses the opposite meaning. In the poem, Amalkanti dreamt to be sunlight and intended to brighten up others' lives. But he had to work in a semi-dark room in a press.
The poem has drawn an authentic picture of the result of the planned career or aim of an individual during schooling. It reveals the fact that the person without an aim is just like a sheep without a rudder.
Amalkanti is a friend of mine,
We were together at school
He often comes late to school
And never knew his lessons
When asked to conjugate a verb,
He looked out of the window
In such puzzlement
That we all felt sorry for him
Attitude Of Amalkanti
Amalkanti was the friend and classmate of
the poet, Nirendranath Chakrabarti. He was a weak and careless student. Often he
would go to school late and never bothered to complete school works.
The poet has revealed the fact
that Amalkanti could not till three forms of the verb. Whenever the teacher asked
him, he started to look out of the window. He looked confused and speechless.
Passage - 2
Some of us wanted to be teachers,
Some doctors, some lawyers.
Amalkanti didn't want to be any of these
He wanted to be sunlight
The timid sunlight of late afternoon
When it stops raining
And the crows call again,
The sunlight that clings like a smile
To the leaves of the jaam and jaamrul
Ambition And Ideal
The poet makes
the fact clear that classmates of their class were ambitious and alert. They
had their goals to be teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc. But Amalkanti was different.
He did not have any aim or career plan but he always wanted to be sunlight so that
he might enlighten even in the fading the evening.
Passage - 3
Some of us have become teachers,
Some doctors, some lawyers.
Amalkanti couldn't become sunlight
He works in a poorly lit room
For a printer.
He drops in now and then sees to me
Chats about this and that
Over a cup of tea then gets up to go
I see him off at the door.
Failure
Years passed, most of
the students settled down. Some of them became doctors, some teachers, some
lawyers, etc.
Nirendranath Chakrabarti said
that Amalkanti failed to achieve his goal. He couldn’t become sunlight, the
person to bring hope and light into anybody’s life.
Misfortunately he had to work
in a semi-dark room as a press worker. He was unable to enlighten even his own
life.
Passage - 4
The one among us who's a teacher
Could easily have become a doctor
If the one who'd wanted to be a doctor
Had become a lawyer
If wouldn't have made much difference to him
All of us hot more or less what we wanted,
All except Amalkanti
Who used to think so much about sunlight
That he wanted to become sunlight.
Conclusion
At last, the poet
compared Amalkanti and other classmates. He described the fact that Amalkanti’s
friend achieved their goals but he failed.
Everybody was satisfied except Amalkanti whose dream was shattered
according to the poet.
Conventionally Amalkanti was not
successful but literally, he was a great success as he had been working to
spread the light of knowledge through books, working inside darkroom for low
pay.
