The poem can be summarized in following ways: -

Parental restriction

Robin Klein says that Amanda was very sad because she was controlled by her
mother all the time. She was restricted to do anything without permission. Amanda was asked not to bite her nails and send her shoulder. She was instructed to sit in right manner to be upright and not to sit in bad posture. The mother of Amanda asked if she had done her homework, made her room clean and polished her shoes. She asked her not to eat chocolate and be careful to pimples. Amanda was also instructed to stop sulking. She was asked not to be very moody as people would think that she was being scolded or tortured.

Wishes of ignorance

Amanda was very innocent. She did not know the beneficial results of parental restrictions in future. She wished that she should have been a mermaid and drift happily in the calm and clear sea. Amanda wished that she should have been an orphan roaming in the streets. She would make dusty footprints with her bare feet. She too, intended to be Rapunzel where she would live peacefully and freely in the tower. In the tower she would not let her shiny and beautiful hair down like Rapunzel.
