Diminishing Trend
Gabriel Okara gives us an idea about the diminishing trend of the culture, moral values and behaviour in the past by addressing his son. He remarks that in the past the behaviour of the people was natural, loving, sincerely friendly and warm. People used to live in a natural way. They used to enjoy every moment of life.
Worse Results
The poet has tried to make him as well as we understand that in the absence of moral values and behaviour people in the modern era have become selfish. They are no longer in a mood to show respect, honour and affection.
Justified title
The poet remembers that in the past, people used to show happiness from the core of their hearts on meeting someone. But now day’s people think that the arrival of a guest creates a big problem. So they want riddance at the earliest possible. Artificiality has taken the place of reality. Socially acceptable traditions have no place in society. He remarks that there was a time when people felt real joy in meeting their friends and relatives. Their behaviour was so genuine and full of warm affection. But now day’s people shake hands with their rights, while their left hands search their friend’s pocket to gain. In the poem, the poet has contrasted the past with the present, so the title is justified and appropriate.
